Girl Up Initiative

Project Goal: Provide 30 sewing machines and sanitary pad material for 250 girls

Cost: $6,000

Purpose/Benefit: GUIU is a young-women-led organization working to provide young women and girls with opportunities to succeed and thrive as leaders in their slum communities through holistic education and economic empowerment that specifically addresses the cycle of poverty that leaves women economically dependent on men. The group facilitates a “Sewing Our Futures” project to enable disadvantaged young women to learn the skills necessary to become designers, tailors and seamstresses. With the guidance of a professional tailor, the women have begun to make fashionable dresses and accessories for local sale. The organization also offers training in reusable sanitary pad production to increase girls’ retention in school, along with overall health and hygiene.
